BYOD and its importance
For those of you who haven’t heard this abbreviation, it stands for bring your own device. It is also referred to as BYOP, BYOT and BYOPC. Just to give you an idea, BYOT is bring your own technology. Can you guess what the other two are?
Bring your own device is a policy which simply means you have been given permission to bring your personal electronic device to work. This policy was brought about by technology consumerization and goes back as far back as 2005.
Tech consumerization basically defines the method in which you and I invest money in technology. Due to tech companies competing with each other, an ever climbing amount of products are being made. This includes everything from phones, computers to tablets. Nowadays, we have countless choices and vendors have a certain expected level of tech standard to match or if achievable, exceed.
How Does This Relate TO BYOD?
Picture this scenario. Let’s assume you are used to using product A and your company prefers product B. Despite this, you decide to take your product to work because that is what you are used to and you will therefore be more efficient.
This scheme just gets better. You know why? Businesses want to make more money and reduce cost so if you and I choose to take our own devices to work then we are in turn, reducing the money spent on office hardware. Some businesses even encourage you to BYOD.
The Other Side of the Coin
Taking your own device to work might sound grand but there is one obvious issue for you and the company. You guessed right, security.
Security for you: What if your device gets stolen or someone hacks into it just to get some of that juicy company data?
Security for the company: How do they control company data on your device? If it gets stolen, how do they protect themselves?
From a personal point of view, who pays for the device when it gets stolen?
Way Out
The solution is evident. Every company should have a policy if they don’t already and their employees should use their devices at work, especially if they’re planning to adopt BYOD in the future. However, the department should have measures in place on the off chance that something goes wrong.
